"When I Scream, No One Hears Me" (Dir. Armanda Rudelytė)
A nonverbal singing and movement performance with circus elements, taking place in Lukiškės Prison.
Lukiškės Prison 2.0 has hosted many theatre performances, and now it invites you to experience a new one!
''When I scream, nobody hears me” is a performance consisting of contemporary dance and circus as well as non-verbal singing. It is largely based on the principle of Laboratory Theatre, experimenting with voice and body to create a unique synthesis of song, movement and circus. These creative tools are used to shine some light on the experiences of people living on the streets, their suffering and our own relation to it.
In preparation for this project, Armanda visited “Carito”, a homeless shelter in Vilnius, where she worked and communicated with the people, gaining a deeper understanding of their circumstances.
As you walk the streets of your own city, you often see someone beg for salvation, but you pretend that they do not exist, that you don’t hear them and go on your way. No screams, no words can begin to approximate that kind of emptiness and anguish. What happens to a person that loses everything: their refuge, their money, their social standing? When their words have no more meaning, their voice is lost too, because nobody hears them.
Words can’t begin to approximate that kind of emptiness and anguish, which is why this performance turns to more intuitive and effective ways to examine those feelings. Voice, untampered with words, and body, free in its movement, are the main sources of expression here. Continuous repetition of sounds, routines, and everyday actions brings out from deep within our souls memories and feelings that were previously repressed, asserts them and makes us grapple with them.
